Rural Women Nepal is a painting that reflects the dramatic situation of women living in a remote region between India and Nepal, where poverty, marginalization, and disease have shaped their lives. The women depicted in the work are victims of a cruel chain of HIV transmission, a result of their husbands’ trips to India, where they contracted the disease through relations with sex workers. Upon returning home, they brought not only the disease but also the condemnation of a society that marginalizes them even further due to their health status and their place within a rigid caste structure.
The painting explores not only physical and emotional suffering but also the invisibility of these women within a society that has relegated them to the corners of the countryside, condemning them to live in precarious conditions with no hope for improvement. In the faces of these women, the disease is but one layer of their suffering, yet it also stands as a testament to their resilience and strength.
