This toy, seemingly joyful, appears to look at the viewer with an expression suspended between the innocent and the unsettling. Its fragile verticality and soft textures remind us of childhood as a realm of discovery, but also of strangeness. There is something in the object’s upright posture, in its isolation, that moves it away from its playful function and into the realm of contemplation. Like a small totemic figure, this toy becomes a symbol of what remains — of what has been touched and left behind, yet still observes.
