This sketch was a quick, direct search for the essential form. I was interested in understanding how, with just a few strokes, I could evoke a recognizable presence without the need to detail either the face or the surroundings. The contained gesture of the figure, the fall of the fabric, the position of the hands: all point to a sense of interiority and calm. It is not a finished drawing, nor does it aim to be. It is, rather, an immediate sketch that retains the vitality of the first stroke. In its immediacy, there is a certain fragility, but also a firmness that I increasingly find compelling in quick studies: when the stroke takes a risk and reveals, even if just for a moment, something essential.
