In Still Life 044, I drew something very close to me: my own pencils, markers and pens, precariously arranged in a jar. I wanted to show not only their physical presence but also their wear—some are worn down, others have lost their function or barely serve anymore. I worked the drawing in Conté charcoal, letting the expressive stroke convey that sense of accumulated time, of tools that were useful and are now nearing their end. As in the whole series, I’m interested in pausing at that moment when the everyday reveals its fragility and quietly speaks to us of the passage of time.
